| rootwarrior's Full Review: Pioneer DEH-P2000 Car CD Player |
This is the first head unit that I have ever bought. I bought it for my old 1986 Celica about a year ago due to the fact that the Toyota standard tape player was just a tape, had a manual stereo tuner, and wasn't loud enough to be heard unless you
put your head directly up to the speaker for the most part. I knew that I wanted something that had a CD player to it, and I also knew that I was on a budget, so I wouldn't be able to spend that much money. With that in mind I walked into my local Highway Audio store and checked out this puppy from Pioneer. The guy in the showroom let me crank it up loud but I wasn't really impressed due to the fact that there was a speaker the size of a small child next to me on the ground. I had serious doubts that this thing would make the four puny speakers in my car sound good, but I gave the guy the go ahead to rock and roll anyways, because I couldn't go a day longer with a tape player in my car. So this was about a year ago, and here's what I know to this date about the stereo that's been rocking hard in my car ever since that day.
I love this thing. The first thing I did on the way home from the Highway Audio place was put in "Soundsystem" by 311 and turned the volume up to the point where I had to roll down the windows. This thing gets loud! Although my mom wasn't really a fan at the time (she was in the car with me on the way back from the Highway Audio place), I pumped loud music all the way home. The only problem that I noticed was that the head unit seemed to call for a lot of bass from the speakers, which my car didn't have at all - this would result in the "I don't have a system" bass farts coming from my little speakers. I was pretty upset that all of the equalizer presets required speakers like the ones in the store, but as I read on I learned that I could adjust them using the "Custom" option on the preset bar. So I did this, and since then I have been pumping my punk rock music loud enough to be heard in foreign countries. As a matter of fact the other day I was in the parking lot of a local drug store reading over some prescription thing I had to get filled and a cop knocked on my window, and informed me that "this town has an ordinance aganist music that loud". "Niiiiice", I thought to myself. This little thing really can pump the vibes if necessary. In short, this head unit has breathed life into my speakers that I never thought was possible. There are many different ways to change the low, mid-range, and high sounds that come out of your speakers. Mess with these dials for long enough and you will soon enough find out how to test your speakers limits, and how to get your speakers as loud as humanly possible without imploding your entire vehicle.
Aside from being able to make people's ears explode, this puppy has many other awesome features. You can actually type in the name of a CD, so that when you put in, say 311's new CD "From Chaos", the display on the CD player will show "FROM CHAOS". Ladies especially love it when you put in one of your CD's and the title pops up. They think it's some sort of amazing accomplishment and you can make up a story about how you paid $8200 for your head unit. The radio really depends on your antennae I guess. I know that I still have my standard Toyota 1986 antenna, which doesn't even go up all the way, and I get great radio reception which is good for listening to "Loveline" when I'm driving home late at night with my boys. I can't really remember about the presets cause I only use about 4 of them, but I think you can put in somewhere around 10 presets, which last you until your car battery dies, at which point all data and changes that you have put into this CD player are lost. The CD player almost never skips, and when it does it's because my car has no shocks, or very small ones. I hit bumps alike on the road, sometimes just for fun and the CD doesn't skip. Sometimes, however, you get one of those "moon craters" in the middle of some road out in the boon-docks, and no matter what head unit you have, nothing will stop this CD from skipping. You get all the usual things that you would get with a CD player with this one. You have your RANDOM play, your REPEAT, your PLAYLIST, everything that you could really want. This CD player does not come with a remote, but that's OK seeing as how I never really saw the point of using a remote for a stereo that's within your reach anyways.
I really do recommend the Pioneer brand for buying car stereo equipment. A couple of my friends have the same head units, or other ones from the Pioneer line that look very similar, and I've never heard of them experiencing any type of problem. Whether they have the same model as me, a cheaper one, or an expensive one, one thing is for sure - Pioneer is becoming a very popular choice of CD players within my group of 30 or so close friends. If I had to guess why it would probably be because the price is right on each one of these, and you get some great features along with it. Pioneer wins my vote as a great all around value for car stereo.
