| ahussain176's Full Review: Pioneer DEH-P2000 Car CD Player |
I purchased this player for my 92 Nissan 240sx some 3 months after I bought the car. The previous owner had some type of problem with the factory tape radio and the system was completely dead when I saw the car. My mechanic said it could be repaired for about 100 bucks but I decided to get a new system since I rarely listen to tapes. I chose Pioneer based only on a prior Pioneer experience I had with another car. My 91 Celica has a dehp2000 so I figured a newer Pioneer system would only be better.
I had the unit installed by a shop, so I can’t say how hard that was, but they finished in 15 minutes, so I assume it’s easy. Overall, the unit is pretty good. The radio is always tuned very well. There is never any static or channel noise no matter what. I’ve even been in a few tunnels where the radio kept playing. The CD portion of it is excellent! I have never ever had it skip. Also, it does play home burned CD’s so that’s a plus. Oh, and damaged CDs are often played with super clarity. It just doesn’t care what condition they are in. The face detaches and a case does come for you to keep it in.
Sound quality is pretty good. You can customize a sound type or choose from preprogrammed types via a toggle switch. High frequencies are what this unit specializes in. They are always crisp and accurate. Lows are not so great. I don’t have a sub, but even at low volume speakers distort. BTW, I replaced the factory speakers with pioneer TSA series with rubber surrounds and synthetic cone element.
All of the above were the pluses. Now here are the low points. The display on this unit is pretty bad. In bright daylight, all display data is faded and difficult to see. Direct sunlight will wash out the display completely. The old model dehp205 did not have this problem; go figure. Anther problem with this unit is the easily scratched face plate. If you forget to use the case for the plate even once, and leave it in the console for glovebox of the car, you will have scratches appear. The buttons for the presets are also way too small. Oh, and it always makes an annoying beeping noise when you change stations, use the power switch, or shift bands.
All of that said, I still recommend this head unit. Just don’t buy a new one. People who are really into car audio change their head units every few years, so you will be sure to find a good deal on a used one. The original retail for this was over $250. I know of ones that can be had today for under $75.
