| kil45's Full Review: Pioneer DEX-P1R CD Changer |
I originally had a Pioneer Dehp 6200 CD reciever. It was pretty good, but one day I decieded to upgrade to a high end deck. I decieded to stick with Pioneer, so my only choices for a high end deck was the Premier P1r and the Premier 920r. I figured that if I was going to spend over 400 dollars on a new deck I would rather have a Pioneer Premier rather than just a Pioneer. Once I got to look at the specs for each deck and the reviews out on each deck, I decieded to go with the P1r.
I purchased the P1r on ebay for $470 shipped. Actually, I didnt get a P1r, I only got a P1. The only difference is that the P1r has RDS( if a radio station broadcasts its call signs or any message, it shows up on the deck ) and it has a Supertuner 5 instead of a Supertuner 3. I was instantly amazed with the deck. I instantly noticed that the sound quality of everything I played was improved, due the the higher voltage of the P1r. The sound was further improved by the Auto - Equalization Microphone. You just plug the microphone into the deck, strap the microphone to your head rest and leave your car for about 5 to 10 mine while the deck plays pink noise to calibrate everything. The deck also has a 13 band EQ, with numerous preset settings and 2 custome settings. The auto equalization does not gurantee the best sound possible, you may have to adjust the equalizer to your taste. Though the sound quality is really nice it still does not compare to the high end decks of other companies( Alpine, Sony, Nakamichi. etc. )
Sound Quality: 9 out of 10
Ok, now on the the numerous functions of the P1r. First of all there is a Pro and Standard mode. If you have a 3 way setup, then you may want to use the Pro mode, but if you have the standard 2 way just go with the Standard Mode. The deck has DSP, which allows you to adjust the listening position to front, front left, front right, all, or none. this is pretty useful, though I would either leave it one front or all. In pro mode you can adjust the distance of the sub to your ears, to better time when the sub hits. I have to admit that I have not used the Pro mode, but this does sound like a pretty nice feature. The deck is also motorized, and there are 4 positions to choose from. You can always find one that will eliminate glare. Thats another good thing about this deck, its still visible in sunlight. This deck also has a Spectrum Analyzer. The only problem with the SA is that it is a split second behind the music. There are also crossovers that you can set on the deck, for each individual speaker( fronts, rears, sub ). This deck is definitely crammed with features, including some that you will never use, but its nice to know that they are there( for example, the deck reads cd text, but not many cds have it, unless you burn your own. ). The only problem with having so many features is that the remote gets very busy, which means one can get easily confused while adjusting their system.
Features: 10 out of 10
The last thing we need to talk about is how the deck is designed and how it looks. The deck is beautiful and is probably the best looking deck that I have ever seen. It does not disappear in sunlight like many decks. The designers of the also limited the amount of buttons on the deck in order to allow for a larger display size which in turn really jumbled up the remote. The buttons are also very small on the deck, so don't count on surviving without the remote. Though I have bad mouthed the remote a lot in this review, the remote just takes time to get used to. After about 1 week with it, I pretty much know all the functions and how to access them off the remote without looking.
Design and Looks: 9 out of 10
You will not be disappointed with this deck. I recommend this for everybody except the extremely hardcore audiophiles, though it may even please some of them. Other decks in this class are the Sony c-90, the Premier 920r, and the kenwood excelon x915. One more thing, it seems that Pioneer is going to replace the P1r with a new deck, the P9. If you really want a P1r I recommend waiting until the P9 is released so you can take advantage of the closeout prices.
