| Mradyfist's Full Review: Aiwa AV-D55 |
The Aiwa AV-D55 is, simply put, an excellent receiver. The sound quality is perfect, and in terms of pure power, the Aiwa's 500 watts blow the competition away. It also comes with some great features: three levels of extended bass, 9 different audio in, a 1/4" headphone jack, remote control with controls for Aiwa's CD player line, it just goes on and on. One of my favorite features is the mute button, which is incredibly useful. When someone calls you on the phone, instead of turning off your music (especially irritating if the call is just an advertisement) all you have to do is mute it. You can still hear the music, but it's just quiet enough to allow a phone conversation.
Now, on to the negative side, and there is a negative side, but it centers entirely on a single aspect: the interface. Although I've gotten used to it, I have to say that there are some irritating quirks in how Aiwa has designed the controls on this receiver. First off is the function dial. This is a huge dial the size of the volume knob, with no other purpose but to change which input you're listening to. Many times, I've told a friend to turn up the volume on the receiver and watched him go for the function dial instead. Aiwa would've done much better in just giving us buttons for each input, or even two buttons to switch. There are other little things that bother me, like the lack of an extended bass button on the remote, and the difficulty of setting presets for the radio, but they aren't that important.
Overall, this is an excellent receiver, and although some parts of the interface are frustrating, I'm sure every manufacturer has similar problems.
