Obviously, the AVR2800 is a replacement for the AVR2700. This is the first surround sound receiver that I have purchased. I looked at Pioneer Elite, Yamaha, Sony ES, Harmon Kardon and the Denon. Initially, the units that I looked at were in the over $1000 price range, but I came to the conclusion that I did not have to spend that much money to get what I wanted. DTS was one of the features that I wanted, so that eliminated a lot of the less costly receivers. My final choices were the Sony ES and the Denon AVR2800. Based of listening comparisons, I picked the Denon over the Sony. Another deciding factor for me was that the Denon has a much simpler design than the Sony. They Sony offers too many options and choices. The is definitely one area when "more" is not better.
To sum up, the AVR2800 offers much of the AVR3300 features without the high cost. The AVR 3300 would have been an overkill in my application. I am using the AVR 2800 with Monitor Audio bookshelf speakers, center speaker and the AW210 sub woofer. Nordost cables are used throughout.
I've used this system strictly for viewing movies. I have other systems for listening to music. I did listen to one DVD-audio recording, but it did not impress me with it's audio quality at 24/96. I did enjoy the music though. You may wonder why I was not impressed? It may be because I prefer the sound of vinyl LP's and tubed electronics for listening to music. I also have some Three Blind Mice CD's that I feel offer sound that is very difficult to duplicate.
It took about three months for me to get the AVR2800 system to sound the way I wanted it to. Since that time, I've enjoyed watching DVD's on this system. The one negative comment is the remote control, but I can live with it.
