| extravecchio's Full Review: Denon AVR-3300 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I have owned the DENON AVR-3300 since it's initial release, and it has been an absolute top performer. Whether you're looking for a highly capable unit to be your primary receiver, or need this for a secondary room, the AVR-3300 will not disappoint.
With the capability to switch two analog component video signals, output to a single monitor, the 3300 was ahead of it's time when new, and is a rare jewel today for those wanting to switch two high quality sources. This allows the user to connect a DVD player, and a game system (Xbox, PS2) via component video, and have the receiver do the switching.
This unit also has a quality DTS processor, if you haven't experienced the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS, you are missing out - try watching your favorite movie in each mode. This unit will make you always check the sound set-up menus of DVD's to see if your disc is encoded in DTS.
With 105 watts per channel, you have plenty of power to drive your favorite speakers with this unit, and you will be thrilled to get DENON's famous sound in this unit which was second only to the flagship 5700 on release.
The 3300 also switches many s-video inputs, has three assignable (GREAT feature) optical audio inputs, as well as one coaxial digital audio input, to handle all of your source material. Speaker outputs are standard drilled shafts / banana plugs.
The remote is absolutely fantastic, completely programmable, and learning (you can point other remotes at it and program practically any button to issue any command). This is a remote you can really run ALL of your gear with provided you master the short learning curve. Amaze your friends as you tweak all of your multi-brand devices from one control! It is also very hardy - and I mention this because remotes can be subject to some hard conditions at times. This one has been dropped multiple times from heights of 4+ ft. had liquid spilled on it multiple times, etc... and continues to perform flawlessly (with cleaning of course). Build quality if the remote is top notch.
Others have complained about build quality of the unit itself and experiencing overheating issues, I have not had a single issue with my unit overheating. My unit has always been in an open air environment, and I suspect putting it in one of those enclosed glass front enclosures, or other tight space could cause improper ventilation and overheat. Check any unit you consider purchasing thoroughly.
I recommend NEVER enclosing your equipment more than necessary as it will surely lead to higher temps and shorter life to the equipment and media. Ever notice that the super high end gear in the stores is is always on nice open shelving? It not only looks great, it keeps your equipment cool and running strong. Front and back open for airflow!
This receiver has been a strong performer for years and all signs indicate that it will continue to be. It will also serve well as a second room, garage, outdoor, or other space unit when the time comes to upgrade your primary.
