| neilsahgal's Full Review: Denon AVR-3300 5.1 Channels Receiver |
Well, what can I say about this model, I just recieved it two days ago, I bought it used through an add on this web site(Thanks James). If you haven't heard of this model, i'll give you the brief rundown. This was denons top model reciever for consumers listing new at close to 1500. This unit is big, weighs 33lbs. IT delivers 110 watts x 3 and 35 x 2 for the surround modes at 8 ohms. I had been searching for the perfect used DPL receiver for about 2-3 months and my choices came down to the Onkyo 636, 727, 646, Denon 2500, 2600. I had my heart set on the 2500 and realized that it was basically made as a cheaper alternative to the 3000, the amps in the 3000 are far superior, and now I see why, this thing is powerful. WHen I opened up the box, the first things I noticed was that this thing was a BEAST, its big. The only thing the 2500 had on it was a little newer dpl chip and the onscreen programming, but my main use for this unit will be for music. This unit was kept on denons line until 1996 i believe, I was scared that the technology on this unit was old or something, coming out probably in '93, but that is not the case, seems very hi-tech to me. This unit comes with S-video switching 7 in the back and also has a front input under a nice little metal flip down tray that smoothley flips down when you push it. It uses binding posts for all speakers, although they aren't that great, will only take bannana plugs. It will also take dual center channel speakers as well. There are 2 remotes, one very complicated and learning, and one with about 15 basic functions. It has i think 11 or more DSP modes, which aren't really necessary. It does have Normal, wide and Phantom modes for the center channel to allow for multiple speakers setups. There are also delay and effect settings for all the speakers. Its got a variety of other options I'm messing with such as room size, delays, auto setup for surround levels and center levels. The pro-logic processing so far is extremely supererior to the crappy JVC my roomate had hooked up over here. I never new the surrounds we had could perform like this. The bass response on the main speakers are also greatly improved. I don't have my own speakers yet, am running my roomates infinity reference 2000.4. If you've got any speakers to sell, drop me a line, I maybe interested, nothing too much though :) Another reason for choosing this unit, was there are like no other recievers that had this kind of power in a DPL model, the only other model is the Onkyo 919, which would be out of my price range. The remote also has macros and personel memory which are very convenient, but a problem with this remote is all the buttons are exactly the same shape and you can't see them in the dark! I'll live with it no problem. The main problem with this reciever is that it isn't dolby digital or dolby digital ready. If you don't care about dolby digital, like me, there isn't a new reciever you can buy for 500-1000 bucks that probably will compare to this receiver in any category, aside from the newer processing. This unit also has discrete amplifiers. If you don't know already, denon makes great products and is also well known for there amps. Not to mention for a DD reciever for 500 bucks you get probably 60 watts per channel and 1000 bucks maybe you get 80 or 85. If you are lucky, you can find someone upgrading to digital and getting rid of these cheap, look to pay anywhere from 250-450 dollars depending on the terms. I believe this unit is almost identical to the denon AVC-3030, which might be lacking a tuner or something.
