I bought my Denon AVR3300 almost 3 years ago, when they were still scarce and paid the full retail price for it. At 105 watts per channel it has more power than most of us will ever approach at home, especially if we are also using an external powered subwoofer. It is so full of features, and easy to use, it puts most other under-$1000 receivers to shame.
Some examples. All speaker connections are 5-way binding posts, no cheap and unreliable spring connectors which so many still are using. You can connect two pairs of surround speakers, and select either or both. The A/D converters are top of the line for exceptional sound. The receiver is very heavy, as a result of the large transformers necessary for full sound reproduction. In addition to Digital Dolby and DTS 5.1 sound decoding, it also lets you select among several "simulated" surround modes. The 5-channel stereo mode is remarkable, as it gives you very good surround sound from stereo CDs and stereo TV programming.
The Denon AVR3300 uses on-screen graphics for setting up and programming the receiver. You can customize the sound modes for each application -- DVD, CD, Tuner, Phono, TV, etc -- and its computer "remembers" the settings, and automatically restores them when you change the appication. The on-screen set-up allows you to adjust speaker distances, select "small" or "large", select "yes" or "no" to external subwoofer, and even generate test tones to allow you to balance the output among all speakers. They really thought of everything!
I suspect this receiver may no longer be available new. However, Denon is one of the premier makers of receivers, and any of them will likely be a leader in their price range.
