This receiver is good for the entry-level home theater crowd. It has all the features required to get you going on an above average home theater system.
The receiver is 5.1 compatible, a must for home theater, and has a DTS decoder. There are digital fiber optic inputs, also a must for DVD hook up, and powered sub outputs. There are no exotic surround sound preset field modes. There is only Dolby digital, 3 stereo, virtual surround and stereo mode. This is not a big deal though as the Dolby digital modes is very acceptable.
The wattage output is very nice driving all speakers with very little THD (total harmonic distortion). The remote control is a universal remote and can be programmed to operate a variety of audio products. It is limited on operating your TV or VCR. Using the remote is kind of tricky though with separate buttons for selecting the video or audio input and it does not have a light.
The only real complaint I have about the machine is the switching from Dolby digital to surround. The machine does not have discreet circuitry. What this equates to is a clicking sound internally when the switch is made. Once again not a big deal, just don’t think there is something wrong with the machine when you hear the clicking at the beginning of a DVD.
When I purchased the receiver I was considering the Lower end Harman Karden and I am happy I did not purchase that machine. I gained a lot of features by going with the Kenwood. The Harman Karden was no doubt a higher quality product but for the same price you have to give up the DTS feature. I have since reviewed the Sherwood receiver and in retrospect this receiver may have been a better purchase.
In summary this receiver is definitely a good purchase. Good Luck
