| scotth21's Full Review: Onkyo TX-DS474 Receiver |
This reciever has excellent sound for music and movies, just as all Onkyo products do. Clear highs, good bass, and quite good power handling for a 55 W/channel receiver (high current). This reciever is quite decent but Onkyo has built a sort of updated version of it (TX-DS484). The 484 is the same price, but has a few more features which you will definitely want. The 474 has dolby digital decoding but no DTS decoding which the 484 does. If you watch a lot of dvd's this is important. My favorite feature that the 484 has however, is the 5-channel stereo mode. This mode allows you to utilize every surround speaker hooked up to the receiver for stereo music. All 5 channels put out 55W. These two features make the 484 ten times better. Nothing else is really different. The power is the same, the remote is basically the same. If you see these two receivers next to each other in the store, buy the 484. You will not regret it.
