| michaelijah's Full Review: Pioneer VSX-D507S Receiver |
When I went out to look for a receiver about a year ago, I really had no clue as to what I was doing. I couldn't ask my technologically challenged parents, so I turned to the next best thing: My neighbor Bob. I went over to his house and the first thing I saw was that practically every piece of audio/video equipment he had was Pioneer. Bob then proceeded to tell me about Pioneer receivers. I thought to myself, "Receivers aren't supposed to do all of that, are they?" Shortly thereafter, I bought the Pioneer VSX-D507S receiver.
The first thing I should cover is the connections on the back of the receiver. They are all neatly positioned, so connecting everything should be a snap. If for some reason you become confused, there is a diagram of where everything should go in the instruction manual. The speaker connectors snap open and shut. Personally, I think they are excellent compared to the kind where you have to hold the button and insert the wire. The Pioneer VSX-D507S also has the ever mighty 5.1 input for DVD. For those of you who don't know what 5.1 input is, it is very simple. Instead of using stereo inputs, there are six inputs, one for every speaker (center, 2 surround, and 2 front) and one for the subwoofer. Since the five speakers cover the full range of sound and the subwoofer covers only a small portion of sound, the whole setup is called 5.1 input.
Many features that make the Pioneer VSX-D507S an excellent buy. There are four Dolby Pro Logic surround sound modes. Two of these modes work with five speaker setups, while one works with four speakers and one works with three speakers. There is also a five-dimensional surround setting. This feature expands stereo sound into all of your system's speakers. It has a stunning effect when sound moves between left and right channels. On top of that, there are six DSP modes. DSP stands for digital sound processing. These DSP modes add interesting effects to sound. For example, the "Hall" DSP mode makes music sound as though it were being played in a huge concert hall, while the "Jazz" DSP modes makes music sound as though it were being played in a Jazz club. The thing I love about this receiver is that I can combine DSP modes with the five-dimensional mode, thus creating some interesting effects.
One feature that really appeals to me is the remote control. Yes, that's what I said, the remote. For you people who wonder what can be so cool about a remote, this is no normal remote. Obviously, this remote received the same cosmic rays as the Fantastic Four because this remote really cooks. Seriously though, this remote is wonderful. It can control virtually any component you could possibly think of. This remote uses one of two ways to control your components. You can either use one of the preset configurations or you can teach the remote signals using your other remotes. But Wait...There's More! This remote has multi-operation capabilities. To use multi-operation, you press the multi-operation button then the button of the device you want to operate. Depending on how you configure multi-operation, the remote will turn on the TV, receiver, the component, or any combination. On top of that the remote has the ability to perform several different tasks by pressing just two buttons. I could also turn the channel to channel 3 fire up "The Matrix" on DVD all in one sweeping motion.
When it all comes down, the Pioneer VSX-D507S is an excellent receiver. The cons to this unit are negligible.
