| hhong's Full Review: Sony STR-DE435 Receiver |
I purchased this unit at the beginning of the year. So far it has performed flawlessly. I paid $200 for it which is pretty cheap as far as stereo equipment goes. I picked a 5.1 channel ready receiver instead of one with one built in because I already owned an external processor.
I used to assume everything made by Sony wasn't worth the money. Most of the times I'm proven right. But their regular line of receivers actually doesn't have the clout to command over inflated prices so you end of getting fairly good bang for your buck and the quality isn't that bad.
Now for the same price today, you could also get a less feature rich Denon or Yamaha and not have to worry as much what some pseudo-audiophile snob has to say. You can even get dolby digital built in. If you don't already have a processor, that's probably what you should get. But if you don't care about 5.1 channel surround, in which case I'd say what's the point, or if you already have a 5.1 decoder, than this unit works very well.
I use it daily. I use it in place of the televisions built in audio and the system doesn't overheat or shut down. I have heard that some units overhead though, and not just Sony's. If you get a unit that's unusually hot to the touch when running, I say take it back. Better safe than sorry. I think in the long run you'll have problems with a machine that runs hotter than it's suppose to. Actually, I have another sony unit that runs too hot and even though it hasn't broken down, the sound quality has seemed to be negatively affected over time. But that's another review.
