| ds0020's Full Review: Technics SA-AX530 Receiver |
Technics receivers have been highly rated by some Consumer outlook magazines, but I'm not sure why. Yes, they have all the features other receivers in the same price ranges have, that isn't what makes a unit good. The construction of the units are a little shody. Looking at the back of the units and comparing them to a similar priced Sony or Pioneer really drives this point home. The inputs are poorly laid out and are a bit confusing if you are trying to reach around the back. The guage of the sheet metal is noticably thinner, but there is just something that say "cheap" about the construction. Do the rear side comparison and I'm sure you'll agree with me. The other main drawback is the seriously high level of Total Harmonic Distortion. Most amps in these price ranges (Sony, Pioneer, JVC) have a distortion rating of .09% in stereo, which is generally believed to be just under human perception, but the Technics amps have a distortion rating of .8%. This is the sort of sound quality you'd expect in a Shelf System, not a home stereo. One other small problem is the remote. The buttons are all the same size and placed close to each other. It is very difficult to use it in low or no light. Also in the same price range as the SA-AX730 and SA-AX930 you'd get a preprogrammed remote from Sony, Pioneer, or Yamaha. For the same price I'd buy one of the latter.
