| spost's Full Review: Yamaha HTR-5140 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I bought this HTR-5140 receiver from J&R store in NY for $279. I purchased this receiver based on all the raved reviews I read from audioreview.com and then I talked to the store clerk also recommended it to me. I didn't read Consumer Reports or looked at "audiophiles" ratings fro the magazines--so I don't know much about the credibility of Yamaha receivers. But if you care about your budget and the quality of sound you want for your budget, this Yamaha receiver will DELIVER.
There's an digital optical input for the DVD player. In fact, there are 2 optical inputs, one for DVD and the other, TV/DBS. I am using the TV/DBS optical input for my CD player. Let me tell you how much better the sound is having the CD changer hooked up to the optical inputs. Sound from the DVD is awesome--dolby digital comes out perfectly. In fact, when I watched "Fight Club" on my system, I enjoyed it much better than when I watched it at the theaters. You could hear the "Dust Brothers" music continuously playing from the rear speakers.
The sound presets are good. You get Disco, Concert Hall, Rock Concert, TV sports, Pro Logic,DSP Enhanced ProLogic and Dolby Digital which automatically kicks in. Concert Hall set is a bit echo-y. I don't know why anyone would chose ProLogic over DSP enhanced Prologic. Perhaps someone can explain that to me.
Overall, the system is great. My housemate has a technics receiver with DTS, and outputs 100Wpc. His costs about $100 more but, so far I don't see why his receiver is superior. In fact, we've tested the 2 receivers using the same set of speakers. We heard no difference. We have yet to test DTS since only a very few DVDs are encoded with DTS.
Get the system. It's worth it.
