I purchased this piece for a few reasons. 1)I wanted a Dolby Pro-Logic receiver with Pre-amp outs, so I could use my Adcom GFA-1A. 2) It was the only unit with said characteristics for more than 150 miles. 3) I knew the inevitable outdating of my Laser Disc collection was coming and DVD would soon dominate my wish list. It was therefore necessary to have something up-gradable.
Well, I got a whole lot more. I now have a great receiver with clear sound and ample power to run my Norman Labs (the Adcom rests in the closet now that I can't afford to run it all the time; 800 watts doesn't seem like a lot until you start paying your own bills). It is easy to set up. A few flicks of the thumb and a close eye on my sound level meter and I was up and running.
When I eventually bought a DVD player and a Dolby Digital decoder I found myself in sonic bliss, whilst a flying yellow taxi spun out over my head in Fifth Element.
I do have a couple complaint to bring to this little bliss party. The remote is a whopping pain in the ol' keister. The main controls are fine, the volume buttons are huge, which is good. The other buttons are small and behind a flip top, which is bad. There is no mute, so phone calls are an ordeal. My other complaint is this; the Bass Boost jumps up the same frequency as the Bass tone control. Holy redundancies Bat Man.
All in all, I like my Yamaha, and when this one finally ambles its way into the bedroom system, its replacement will be a great grandchild.
