Pros: Incredible sound, excellent quality, vast array of features

The Bottom Line: The Yamaha is well worth your hard earned money! Not a single problem with the unit, and unbelieveable sound quality for a reciever in this price range.

| rdyrbye's Full Review: Yamaha RX-V495 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I purchased this reciever for christmas of 2000. The recivever has not had a blip or problem since. There is a multitude of connections on the back, including Fiber optic and digital coax on the back. It also has S-Video switching, which allows you to connect several S-video components to the amp, and run one S-Video cable to the TV. This is great for me, since my TV has only one S-Video input, but i have a satelite, VCR and DVD player connected to the amp. There are several theatre modes to choose from for Dolby Pro logic, and also for DTS, and Dolby digital. The amp has on board DTS and Dolby digital processing, and they never glitch. The remote is awkward at first, but once you get used to it, you can actually use it to control all your devices. It is a multi brand remote, and It controls my Sony TV, JVC VCR, Panasonic DVD player and even my Bell expressvue. The sound quality is excellent because the amp features discrete channels. This means every speaker in essence has it's own amplifier. This is most noticible when you turn the volume up and there is a quiet spot between tracks or scenes. my old amp had an audible hissing sound coming from it, this amplifier is ultra quiet. The actual display is simple and easy to follow, and does not distract you from the movie or sound with flashing lights or multiple colours. It has a classic, elegant, high quality look and feel to it. One thing that is missing in my opinion is a "night cinema" option. I live in an apartment building, and when i want to watch a DVD late at night, I have to turn the volume up fairly high to hear the vocals ok in the quiet scenes, then when it switches to a scene in a club or a shooting scene, the volume is too high for late night in an apartment, which means i often have to turn the volume up and down and up and down while watching a movie late. This can be somewhat circumvented by increasing the volume of just the centre speaker (which you can do with this amp) but then when you turn it up later during a daytime movie, you would want to adjust this back down to make it sound more accurate and balanced. Overall, other than this one tiny complaint, I think this is an excellent reciever and well worth the money you pay for it.
