I received this receiver as a Christmas gift in 1998. It replaced a mid-level Sony receiver that lasted through college, but little longer. I have been nothing but happy since hooking up my system with the Yamaha.
Like most modern receivers, the instructions to set the unit up with your existing system can be complicated, and may require the help of someone who is proficient with home stereo installation. Once fully connected, the unit is remarkably easy to use. Of particular merit is the large, open faced remote control that manages to replace most of your existing remotes. The sound quality out of the receiver is very crisp and remarkably clear, especially considering the price range.
Controls on the front face of the receiver are all well labled and fairly intuitive. Although I personally have no need for them, it is nice to have the option of a full A/V connection on the front of the unit, including an additional S-video jack (handy for connecting camcorders and digital cameras).
The surround sound features of the receiver are very tunable, but do require some technical understanding of how to properly "tune" a surround sound environment. After a little play time, it seemed fairly easy to figure out.
On the down side, the remote control does not have enough memory to really replace all of the functions on my other remotes. While I was looking forward to having one or two remotes left on the coffee table, I now have all of the old ones and one really, really big one to deal with. Also, certain features like bass/treble adjustments and speaker selection are not available on the remote. This is sort of frustrating.
All in all, great product for a reasonable price.
