Pros: Great sound, Price and looks. Lots of inputs including S-Video and composit, 4 optical inputs
Cons: Bulky and confusing remote, no Component inputs/outputs
The Bottom Line: If you can still find one used or new this is the way to go. Stick with Yamaha and you wont be disapointed !

| tonyvdb's Full Review: Yamaha RX-V995 5.1 Channels Receiver |
Some people say that home theater is over rated. Why spend thousands of $$ on equipment when you can enjoy a movie at your nieborhood theater.
I say that they do not apreciate being able to relax in your own home and be able to pause or review a section in a movie.
I bought the Yamaha RX v995 a year ago (its now June 2004) on ebay and have found it to be worth evry penny. I payed only $250US for it and it is in mint condition.
The sound is clean and crisp and has more inputs than most people could ever use. At 100 wats per ch. and and the ability to pre out any one of the 5.1 channels, I have little or no complaints I am still using my Carver Receiver 6250 to power the main speakers only because I wanted te extra power that the Carver provvides (160w per ch.) To run my Mission 765's.
The only small complaints that I have are that there is no tape pass through to hook up an external eq. but the Yamaha has great sound without and needs very little re-enforcment of an eq. and there are no componant inputs or out puts but as this receiver was made befor these were widly used it id not a big deal as most people will send the signal directly to the TV as I do. Also the remote is complicated and offers many macro settings and will learn other remote signals. but once you get used to it it preforms many operations at the touch of a button.
The DTS and Dolby Digital sound prosessors ar far superior to any other systems that I have heard with the exeption of the high end Nakamitchi, Bang & Olfson, or others that can eat a much bigger chunk of your paycheque.
The other souround features like Hall, Church, concert etc. are somwhat useful but it depends on what sourse you are using. I leave it mostly on concert hall for music with the peramiters made smaller in the settings. One of the many things I like about this receiver is the large detailed display and the on screen programing it is very helpful in setup. I also love the fact that it remebers the setting for the input that you use when on CD it goes to Concert hall and when on DVD it automaticly detecs the dolby Digital or DTS input.
Over all the receiver has all the bells and whistles that you can want for a small price. Yamaha really knows what really is needed in a home Theater enviornment.
It may only be 5.1 but if you have a small to medeum sized room then this is all you need. Watching Movies on my Sony HDTV 53" has been a real treat!
