As an addition to my home theater system, I decided to look around for a new A/V reciever. I already have an Onkyo reciever in my basement home theater system, and I decided to put the Onkyo up in my room, and buy a new one for the basement system (the most powerful one in the house). I thought of buying a Sherwood RVD-9090R which I tested out, but then I decided to look at Sony and Yamaha recievers because they had the best prices. I was online, and I saw the Yamaha RX-V995 on sale. The price was slashed from $849.99 to $799.99. Now who could resist something like this? It had every feature that I needed, and I could want. So I bought it. I got a large package 4 weeks later, and there it was... The Yamaha RX-V995. Here's what I found with the Yamaha RX-V995:
Price:
The Yamaha RX-V995 can be found online or in stores at a price ranging around the ~$800s. Some people say they found it for as little as $600. But this reciever can be found for $800 flat pretty easily. The Yamaha RX-V995 is loaded with lot's of features that you'll find on the more expensive $1000+ recievers. This thing is loaded, and is well worth the price I think. It already has 100-Watts per channel, and it has Dolby Digital/Pro Logic and DTS decoding. This will already give you the ultimate theater experience. The Yamaha RX-V995 has many of the features that a hardcore music and video junkie needs, it has an optical output, lot's of digital outputs, digital decoding, laser disc output, artifical digital sound (concert hall, rock concert, etc...), cinema DSP, and more! The Yamaha RX-V995 is well worth the price of ~$800. It's the ultimate reciever for the people who are really into it. The Yamaha RX-V995 is cheaper than some Onkyo and Denon recievers of the same class, but it packs much more for less.
Warranty:
The Yamaha RX-V995 comes with a 2 year parts&labor warranty from Yamaha. Yamaha is a very reputable company, and takes care of all problems and anything else with no hassles. But really, who needs a warranty; this is a very solid reciever :o)
Durability:
The Yamaha RX-V995 is a very solid reciever. Yamaha products overall are built to last for a life time. The Yamaha recievers seem to have sturdier and stronger builds than other recievers that I have seen from companies like Sony and Sherwood Newcastle. The Yamaha RX-V995 will last for years and years and years. Truly an unbreakable system.
Looks and Styling:
The Yamaha RX-V995 itself is a very attractive looking reciever. It looks pretty high tech with all of its knobs and its cool looking frame. The system has more curves and does look smoother than most other recievers. The Yamaha RX-V995 looks beautiful, and really looks great in a home entertainment system.
Installation:
The Yamaha RX-V995 isn't any harder to hook up compared to any other reciever. The Yamaha RX-V995 actually has a simple to use back panel, it's not nearly as complicated as other systems. All of the outputs are in easy access, and hooking up other systems shouldn't be a problem at all with the Yamaha RX-V995. The Yamaha RX-V995 also comes with a detailed instruction manual, using this reciever shouldn't be a problem.
Sound:
The sound is simply amazing with the Yamaha RX-V995. It is a 5.1 channel system, which has 100 x 5 watts. The total system power is 500-Watts. The sound that came through my M&K speakers sounded simply amazing and very powerful. The Yamaha RX-V995 has massive power. When I slightly adjust the knob, such as 1/6 of the way, the system already becomes amazingly loud. The Yamaha RX-V995 can allow for very loud sound without any distortion at all. The sound is clear, and amazing. With the reciever, you can set different artificial sounds such as rock concert, concert hall, and many others. The Yamaha RX-V995 does have sound enhancers, such as Cinema DSP and Tri-Field Processing. It really enhances the sound dramatically. The Yamaha RX-V995 also has 3 digital built-in decoders, which are Dolby Digital Surround, Dolby Pro Logic, and DTS. The Yamaha RX-V995 offers the greatest sound, at a great price.
Video:
I was able to hook up my Sony VCR and an Onkyo DV-S535 DVD into the Yamaha RX-V995. The video quality that was on my Sony KP53V85 looked great. The Yamaha RX-V995 comes with an S-video output and an optical output. The video quality was amazing on my TV screen. The Yamaha has the options of attaching a DVD player, 2 VCRs, Phono, and even laser disc! The Yamaha RX-V995 is really loaded with plenty of features.
Ease of Use:
Operating the system without the remote control is very easy. I found it easier to control volume, bass, treble, and the output on the Yamaha RX-V995 much easier than any other system on the market. The system itself is very simple to use, but the remote control is another story. The remote control is a long and sleek silver one, and you can control most of the settings and features through it. The remote control is quite difficult to use though. It's not good for beginners in the field of A/V recievers, but eventually, you'll get used to it. I prefer using the system without the remote control, but the remote control is usable. Overall, the Yamaha RX-V995 is an easy to use system.
The Verdict:
The Yamaha RX-V995 is probably the most amazing reciever that I've ever seen for under $1000. It packs just about every feature that you can imagine. The Yamaha RX-V995 is a music and video junkie's dream. It's powerful, durable, high quality, and is just about perfect in every aspect. The system itself is very easy to use, but the remote control is somewhat more difficult to use. The Yamaha RX-V995 gives out superior power and performance. It's well worth it at a price of around ~$800.
