| musinteg's Full Review: Yamaha RX-V995 5.1 Channels Receiver |
Picked this one up on e-Bay cheap. 3 blown channels. Repair was of moderate difficulty. I don't know how anyone could wreck this amp. I ran this thing all 5 channels loaded, at 1/2 rail voltage (1/2 the power goes to the load, other half gets lost across the transistors as heat). It was burning hot and perfectly stable for 20 minutes before I let it go. Solid power.
Cosmetics:
Standard home theatre receiver. Display is larger than most, yellow is easy to read at night.Display is also dimmable from the remote.
Inputs:
Inputs a plenty!! lots of S-video inputs, 5 optical inputs and 2 co-axial. Standard inputs for external decoder.
Outputs:
usual outputs plus "zone 2" ( read 'another room' ) stereo output in case you have a spare integrated amp and pair of speakers in another part of the house. Selectable from the front, while you are watching a movie, someone in another part of the house could be listening to the FM tuner, or tape deck, or phono....
Power:
100 watts RMS / ch x 5 channels. It does deliver, All channels loaded with 8 ohm load, cilpped at 102 watts continuous power at 0.06% THD. Again, rock solid power.
Sound / Soundfields / Digital processing
As usual, the yamaha has a sound that will offend no-one. Full liveley bass, smooth-quick mids and highs will work well in almost any room. The Dolby Digital 5.1 is accurate as usual while DTS was also handled very well. I like the Yamaha '70mm' soundfields as they add an interesting amount of depth to movie watching. It was an enhancement without being a distraction.
Overall:
Very very nice unit. At this price point ($800 new, $350 used) it has a lot of competition. I lean towards the Yamaha's because the sound takes no gambles. It is very neutral, leaving you to forget the receiver and just enjoy the show.
But business is business, when it sells I will be sad to see it go. It sat in my home theatre for a month on "test" and proved to be an exceptionally capable performer.

Amount Paid (US$): $108 DOA
