| Stevecater's Full Review: Yamaha RX-V995 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I bought this unit about 8 months ago strictly for Home Theater use.
I have a high end 2-channel audio system for quality audio but I wanted to get into the HT scene.
I did try using the unit's pre-outs with my Bryston power amplifiers (just to see how it compared to a good audio preamp) and I was not impressed. From audiophile point of view this unit is just not up to the job for accurately reproducing 2=channel music, even with quality power amps.
Audiophiles aside, this unit is perfect for the non-discerning listener. With my DVD hooked up and a DD software title the performance is nothing short of astounding! With a good subwoofer and speaker system it will knock your socks off!
I must agree with the widespread complaints about the remote. It's awkward to use and the hinged door is likely to get broken in time. Functionally, it does all you need and more, it just feels weird!
I can't comment on the power abilities as I only use the on-board amps for center and surrounds, my mains are run from high power amps through the pre-outs. There is however, ample power for the cneter and surround and the sound is clear and balanced. One onte for those using separate amplifiers, the RX-V995 does allow you to adjust output signals to balance any amplifier combination.
THe built in effect modes are all but useless. The surround modes are useful however I alternate between 2 depending on the movie format. I find all the effects like Chuch, Rock Concert, etc to be completely annoyning.
About the only real con I found is in the audio inputs. Yamaha provides only 2 coaxial digital connections DVD & CD. There are optical inputs for DVD, CD, MD, TV/DBS. The problem arose with my satellite (DBS) receicer. It has COAXIAL outputs only for Dolby Digital. My Satellite is brand new top of the line so there is nothing else available (in Canada anyway) so why does the Yamaha only have an optical input for DBS???? I ended up having to hook up the DBS to the DVD inputs and the DVD to the DBS inputs. THis is kind of screwed up but it's the only way to make it work.
All in all this is a feature packed performer that will not disappoint.
