| alphaproject's Full Review: Acoustic Research AR17 Speaker |
Well, I replaced my old Infinity Sterling Series 6 1/2 speakers with these Acoustic Research speakers and I couldn't be happier. The tweeter in this speaker is no joke either. It's very clear and crisp, yet not tinty or bright. It almost sounds similar to studio monitor speakers.
The AR17 2-way speaker is slightly smaller but packs the same sonic punch as the AR15. The AR17 employs a plasma transferred, diamond hardened 1 Titanium dome tweeter and a 5-1/4 MagAlloy Monocoque Woofer. All transducers are magnetically shielded.
They definitely require a long break in period though, which I was not worried about since I watch a lot of DVD movies.
Right out of the box they don't have as high of end as I got with my mom's Wharfdale speakers, but the midrange vocal clarity was far, far better. I have a huge sub so as far as bass goes, they aren't handling any of the bass but I have never seen them distort either.
They are very elegant looking and I would advice nice, tall, speaker stands for them. I also use very thick, 12 gauge, copper wiring to get the most out of my system. They are being powered by the Denon AVR-2802 which holds a modest 90 wpc x 6. These are my main L/R speakers and I can crank these puppies with NO DISTORTION.
Also, their imaging is excellent because they do not sound as if they are speakers. The sound just comes out of them. I used to think that if you could hear the left or right, that was good imaging, but I recently seen that you are not supposed to be able to tell and the AR17s fit that catagory. Way to go AR.
