| hlem's Full Review: Polk Audio RT15i Speaker |
I recently replaced some Energy floor standing speakers with these bookshelf babies. I was looking for something that wouldn't take up much space, but would still be capable of reproducing "big" sound that was similar to floor speakers; so off I went to the local store with a cd in hand.
I walked into their speaker room and quickly discovered that they carried only four models in the price range I had in mind ($100-$200 US). I knew there was a special on Polk Audio's that weekend, and I figured I'd probably be walking out of the store with a pair of them, but I had only read of opinions on their performance, never having the fortune of experiencing a polk audio product first hand.
So, in popped my CD into a Sony DVD player connected to a Harmon Kardon DD receiver, and the sound competition began.
I figured if any of the music sounded good on this, it would be a complement to the speakers.
JBL N24's - hmmm.. funny looking design.. really made for home theatre but the cheapest of the bunch and... no power.. no bass... reminded me of tinny car speakers hanging by a thread on the door of a 1970 Chevette.
Polk Audio R10's - Ahhh, better. But they had really high sounding tweeters... very trebbily... almost on the verge of distortion... great bass... but they seemed to force the sound out... like the way you'd feel after being constipated for three weeks because of all the fibre you forgot to eat while taking the antibiotics for your fourth sinus infection of the year. Maybe it was the receiver.
Polk Audio RT15i's - Nope. It wasn't the receiver. The music sounded Very good. Nice punch on the bass. Better clarity without the distortion... and no hiss. (I hate hearing a "hiss" when nothing is playing.) It drives me nuts. If I notice it, it's going to be all I hear... even when something is playing. Plus, they seemd to tame the power coming in from the receiver.
Cerwin Vega E78's - For a set of speakers that advertises such an impressive set of specs... they didn't sound that good. I use to own a pair of their huge honkin' floor speakers that just bass'ified every single piece of sound coming out of them, so I was skeptical of anything from them afterwards. These guys were a pass.
I walked out of the store that day with a pair of RT15i's in hand, and I haven't regretted it since.
They're hooked up to an ATI 2-channel power amp and a Rotel pre-amp playing sweet, sweet music in me home...
