I've just added this center channel speaker to my home theater set-up that includes front and rear Sony SS-MF515 speakers (see my review of them if you are interested).
I picked the Sony CN490 because it is an acoustic match for the 515's. The soundfield is seamless from left to right. Getting good voice matching with your main speakers is critical if you are planning a home theater. If you don't, the sound will seem fragmented as special effects move from left to right. Also, the discrete center channel anchors the the dialog, so a speaker that accurately reproduces human voices is essential.
I realize that in the past, Sony has not been particularly known for its speakers. I've owned products from JBL, AR, Dahlquist, Advent, Polk, KLH and Altec Lansing, so I have had experience with a range of manufacturers. The current Sony line is worth a listen.
In my opinion, I believe the best results for home theater comes from matching the sonics of all the speakers. If you are on a limited budget, this speaker will work quite well.
The CN490 is very clean and smooth in the mid-range. It can handle up to 150 watts of power through its two 12 cm woofers and 1 balanced dome 2.5 cm tweeter. Although a little large, I have it sitting directly on top of my 36" Wega and there is no magnetic interference with the picture.
