| audiophileguy's Full Review: Paradigm Mini Monitor Main / Stereo Speaker |
I purchased a pair of these wonderful little boxes a couple of years ago, and they still impress me every time I use them.
My taste varies widely when it comes to music, and the Mini Monitors sound good with everything I put through them, whether it's Rage Against the Machine, Enya or anything in between.
I'm also using these speakers as my mains for my home theater set up. Since the room I'm using these in is small (about 12 feet by 12 feet) they are more than adequate in regards to loudness. I was using these speakers without a sub for a few months, and though they still sounded superb, I found that the bass just wasn't doing it for me when it came to movie soundtracks. Don't get me wrong, the bass on these guys is decent for their size, though I found I had to be in a center position to hear the best imaging from them. Because they are, after all, bookshelf two-ways, the Mini Monitors just can't produce the amount and depth of bass that's needed to truly enjoy movies (or even music) these days.
Anyway, wanting more bass, I went ahead and bought Paradigm's entry-level powered sub (PDR-8 see other review on that for specifics), to complement the Mini Monitors. And complement they did.
Paired with the sub, these speakers shine all the more because they don't have to work so hard at the bass, instead focusing on the midrange and highs, which they put out very decently.
Let me emphasize that though these things can get loud, especially in small rooms, that's not necessarily the point, at least for me. If it is for you, buy some mass-market KLHs. The emphasis here is purity of sound. Paired with a good amp and some quality cable, I think these speakers will more than impress even critical listeners with their sound. And that price? I've spent more on cables and interconnects than I did for these speakers!
