| bala_zala's Full Review: Paradigm Monitor 9 Main / Stereo Speaker |
I was actually looking for some decent main speakers for my denon(1803) receiver. I was planing on a low budget and was having plans of getting energy c-3 or jbl-s38 as mains. Then i saw these big beasts at sale. I heard them connected to a sunfire amp and the sound was like really awesome. The big bass was there and all the details too. I listened to it connected with various receivers and the sound was nothing short of spectacular. I also tried listening to other speakers like infinity etc,in this price range but wasnt quite as impressed as these, especially at high volumes.Energy Veritas V2.3i speakers was good but wasnt in my budget and the bass was deeper in this.I totally forgot about my budget and went for these without any second thoughts.
When i got them home i placed them with a slight toe in and about 10 feet apart with about a foot away from the walls. The sound was really good with my humble powered amp. My amp is actually not much known for the bass but is very detailed. These speakers brought out the best of my amp and i could hear what i never heard before from my dvd collection.
Speaking of bass, try watching chapter 10 from the movie "The haunting". The bass put forth by the 8 inch drivers in these speakers are really powerful and deep. It will outperfrom the smaller subs with ease. The frequency response of these are rated around 44 hz to 20 khz but u will swear it gets deeper than that.Even with the setting of the speakers as small in the receiver the bass is there for you to feel. Some people think they can get some decent book shelf speaker and add a sub to take care of the bottom end of the frequency spectrum, but i feel a pair of good tower speakers as these would surely do better than that. I watched the same movie(The haunting- chapter 10) at my friends place who has energy sats and infinity sub(BU 120). The bass did'nt quite have the definition as what the paradigms could deliver. Only subs with real quality can deliver the tight punch with clean definition when the sound track demands it out of your speaker. I would still go for the paradigms than to spend a small fortune on a bigger sub. Besides the sound imaging would any day be better and easier to achieve in a tower speaker than a combo of bookshelf's and a sub.
When i compared these with m7, i guess the m7 has better midrange but the sound was bigger and fuller in m9. So i went for these. I kinda like speakers with some serious bass. These speakers may sound kinda bright in smaller rooms but is not so in a bigger room. If anyone is having ideas of buying a sub sat system, forget it and listen to these. the difference is like day and night. You wont be disappointed.
