The Cambridge Soundworks BassCube 10 is a moderately compact subwoofer designed to enhance the bass of smaller speakers or for use in home theater applications.
The Cambridge Soundworks BassCube 10 is similar to the Cambridge Soundworks 12, to which I gave a very positive review on Epinions. The main difference is that the 10 uses a slightly smaller woofer (10" v. 12") and costs about $100 less.
Both the 10 and the 12 employ acoustic suspension woofers, which tend to yield tight and articulate bass. Both have adjustable crossover frequencies, adjustable volume controls, and internal amplifiers.
In its bass character, the 10 is quite similar to the 12, the primary difference being that the 12 extends to about 25 hz, while the 10's lower limit is probably closer to 35 hz. Both provide tight bass, and both will extend the lower limit of quality stereo systems with smaller woofers in the main speakers. The 10's bass extension is more than sufficient to handle the lowest strings of the bass guitar (around 41 hz), and that's as deep as bass gets on most non-classical recordings.
I did notice that the 12 makes music sound a tad "fuller" than the 10, and also provides a bit more information about the room in which a recording was made (much room ambiance information occurs at very low frequencies). The 12 may also play a bit louder without strain.
The 10 retails for $350, and can sometimes be found on sale for about $275. As such, it is a really good deal.
In addition, all Cambridge Soundworks speakers have a 45 day money back guarantee, meaning that you can take them home and audition them in your own system.
Each of the Cambridge subwoofers come in attractive, understated cabinets that can be unobtrusively located on a back wall in your room.
To summarize, the 12 is still my favorite. But the 10 is a good choice for smaller rooms, or if your budget only allows you to spend about $300 for a subwoofer.
Both are quality products from a respected manufacturer.
