| MythSpell's Full Review: Infinity HPS-250 Speaker |
This Infinity subwoofer falls into that rare category of sub $1000 models which can effectively reproduce low-end bass from not just movies but also regular music. Most subs in the same price range cannot keep up with the fast paced dynamic range of music. However the HPS-250 does so beautifully. This is primarily due to Infinity using a custom designed amplifier which was tailored to meet the unique needs of a subwoofer. Most other mid-level models use off the shelf amps which are simply overmatched for the job at hand.
I think one of the greatest indicators of the success of this subwoofer can be found in my wife's reaction the first time it was used. Like many people she is no audiophile but knows what sounds good. She made comments about how much better it sounded than other subs she had heard. She assumed all of them had this "boomy" quality that over-emphasized the bass and made it seem "unrealistic". But the HPS-250 "played the low-end sounds just enough without being obtrusive" and "blended in well with the rest of the sound".
If you feel, as I do, that this is exactly what a good subwoofer should do, I would suggest that you can't do much better than the HPS-250 for the price.
