| ieatskunk's Full Review: Infinity BU-80 Subwoofer Speaker |
The sound system I have in my bedroom consists of a 200 watt stereo amp, a couple CD changers among other things. The speakers I have are the discontinued Infinity Sterling Series speakers with 5 1/4 inch woofers. These speakers alone do an excellent job at providing great sound, but I wanted more. I looked into some towers but decided against it because of the limited size of my room. So I decided to look at powered subwoofers. I was at a local electronics store and was comparing two different subwoofers: a 12 inch, 150 watt JBL sub (sorry, I don't know the model number) and the Infinity BU-80 which houses an 8 inch driver and a 75-watt amplifier. Both the Infinity and JBL were similarly priced. When I listened to the JBL I was not impressed. Yes, there was a lot of bass reproduction, but it was very loose and floppy, not the tight solid bass I was looking for. When I turned on the Infinity sub I was amazed! This little sub shook the entire sound room with rock hard bass, making the JBL look like a Casio or something. So I bought it. My receiver/amplifier is a Sony stereo model and does not have a separate subwoofer output, so I made use of the BU-80's built in crossover networks (which connect directly to the speaker outputs from the reciever). This subwoofer, along with my Infinity bookshelf speakers, is able to reproduce the clearest sound I have ever heard. Rather than have the extreme "who needs music when we've got bass?" sound that a Bose system would produce, my Infinitys can create a very lifelike representation with a vast amount of clarity. This is only possible because of the strong, yet controlled, bass coming from the BU-80. I have had the Bu-80 since the summer of 1999 and have yet to find anything wrong with it. It is small and fits anywhere and allows to control the volume of the bass alone, and where the crossover cuts in.
