| LuVah's Full Review: Paradigm PDR 8 Subwoofer Speaker |
Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Paradigm. I auditioned a few of their speakers in the past (Monitor series, PS series, etc.) and even own a pair of Monitor 9's. Needless to say, I have high expectations of their products, but usually am not disappointed. I wish this could have been the case with the SB-8, but it's not.
I saw a description of the SB-8 sub, and was impressed. I liked the fact that it had a very small depth (uncommon in subs) which makes it easier to find a spot for the sub. However, it sounded horrible. Listening to it side by side with a similar Mirage 8" (100 watt) sub was like comparing a hippo to a tiger. Sure, the SB-8 can put out a lot of bass, but it's overpowering and bloated. The bass notes aren't well defined, and the bass lacks authority in general. "Boomy" pretty much says it all. Considering the fact that I was trying the sub in a pretty large room, I couldn't even imagine how boomy the sub would have been in a smaller room.
The Mirage, on the other hand, was almost perfect. The bass notes were very well defined, the bass blended smoothly with the music, and the sub was plenty quick. My only complaints would be that I could hear a little port congestion, and it didn't have quite enough "oomph" to fill the room with bass (the latter is quite understandable considering the room was much too big for an 8" sub). After seeing my disappointed face, the dealer explained to me that he stopped purchasing this particular sub because of its dismal performance. The model I was auditioning was the last of his inventory. I guess my final advice is to just stay away from this one!
