Pros: Very Good Picture
Cons: Bulky Size
Problems reading some discs
The Bottom Line: Buy it if you are getting a good deal. Otherwise save your money for either a smaller unit or one that does progressive scan.

| sdateumd's Full Review: JVC XV-501 DVD Player |
I bought this player from Best Buy as an open box item. I was somehow able to coax the salesman to include in it remote and component cable from a brand new progressive scan JVC unit. I took it home, and the first movie I saw on it was "Fargo". I really enjoyed the player and the features it had. Aside from the fact that I could not sit it on top of my TV (because of its depth) I was happy with the player. The LCD interface is quite nice and the unit looks very professional/sturdy.
But then I rented Bridget Jones Diary on DVD and had trouble playing it back. I finally found the EPROM fix on the web and have since then enjoyed "Amelie" on the player.
I would only recommend this player if you get it cheap.
Otherwise I would go for one that plays back MP3's and JPEG slideshows and is much smaller.
Also, the on-screen feature which is common with other JVC DVD models of this age is a very handy feature. It allows you to search chapters, change subtitle language and tweak the picture and sound options. all the while watching the movie in a box within the on-screen menu. Kind of like Picture in Picture - except the other image is the menu interface.
