| hollywoodtx's Full Review: JVC XV-501 DVD Player |
I bought this player about six months ago just because I was looking for a deal and there was an "open box" special on this item. It turned out to be a terrific purchase.
I've put this DVD through its paces, playing everything on it from complex DVD's like "The Matrix" to imported VCD's to audio CD's I've burned myself, and it always works great. I've actually played the same DVD's on other players that belong to friends, and noticed that their color reproduction and performance is not as good as mine. Specifically, the "Austin Powers" DVD looked blown-out when viewed on a Toshiba DVD player in a similar price range, while on my player the colors were sharp and clear. Further, I've noticed the much talked about synching problem on my dad's much more expensive Sony player, while the same DVD playing in my JVC gave me no problems whatsoever. The JVC also seems to access menus faster than other players.
Besides performance, this player also benefits from a really neat function called "OnScreen" that allows the user to dynamically change menu settings (such as the audio track) while the movie continues to play in a quarter-screen sized box. I've never seen this feature on another player and it's really useful.
There aren't any real drawbacks to the player for me, however some of my friends have said they don't like the remote. Although one of those friends has carpel tunnel, so I don't know if he's really qualified to voice an opinion. Regardless of this, it's definitely easy to use. Since it was "open box" I didn't get a manual with it, but I've never needed one.
If you're looking for a dependable, reasonably priced unit with nice features and good design, I'd recommend it.
