| autoamerican's Full Review: Philips DVD815AT DVD Player |
As far as DVD players go, I've seen better. I myself have been purchasing digital video products since the mid 80s with laserdisc and VCD discs. From what I've seen on this player, DVD is still too early in development to be a valid format. The video on this player was fair but the entire point to having a DVD player is to have "crystal clear" picture. The sound was very good, but that's something that's more or less standard on the compressed 5" disc format. This would be a good product for someone who plans to own very few DVDs. It gives fair video quality and a standard audio quality making it not a wise choice for the DVD collector. It also had problems playing older VCD discs, a forerunner of DVD and also is a 100% compatable format on my other DVD player. If the price on this unit is a factor, I suggest not buying. I also own a CREATIVE LABS PC-DVD DXR2 DVD player which is in my PC. Ironically, it gives far superior video and sound quality while costing about 1/2 that of this player. It also has video output jacks which allow you to watch DVDs on your computer, or to watch them on your television. Based on the poor video quality, price and compatability issues of the Philips DVD 815AT, I suggest you pass this over.
