| maorosz's Full Review: Philips DVD825AT Player |
I was looking to get into the DVD game and was somewhat short on cash. I found the answer to my problem with this item.
The Philips DVD 825AT was my first and only DVD player purchase. I've had it for about 9 months now, and I can say that I have no complaints with the product. The player supports DTS as well as the mandatory Dolby Digital audio. It has 2 digital outputs, on optical and one coaxial. This is important for flexibility, as not all receivers/decoders are as well thought out. It also has RCA in/out puts for video and audio.
I strongly recommend the optical digital audio output as it offers pure digital sound--no converting to analog and back to digital. Obviously, digital audio is a huge reason to get DVD in the first place. Don't make the mistake I did, where my receiver does NOT have optical audio input for the "DVD" panel. I had to hook up my DVD to the DSS/TV inputs in order to use the optical hookup. Another "must have" is a powerful subwoofer. Newer movies, although not all, have deeper bass frequencies encoded than ever before. Compare VHS tapes with DVD of the same movie and you'll undoubtably notice a difference there as well.
The sound is incredible, although stereo system dependent, and the picture sharp. I have noticed some faint flicker lines at times, but I am unsure if it is related to the player. I also have had a couple instances where I had picture but no audio. Again, I don't know if this is related to the player or something else. Currently, it works quite well. The remote is functional, but many buttons are unclearly labeled as to their function.
As an added bonus, I received a free DVD movie included in the package, and an offer from the retail store for 5 additional free movies, as well as free rental coupons for DVDs for a year. I am quite happy with my purchase, and I think it will last for several years to come.
