| splitsurround's Full Review: Pioneer DV-606D DVD Player |
I bought this model, my first DVD player over a year ago, and for the most part, have no complaints about it.
On the plus side, it seems to be very stable-I have friends who's DVD players won't play certain discs, or have serious sync problems (more later on that). The 606-D seems to like all the discs I've put in it.
The only complaints I have are nit-picking technical ones. First, I work in the audio field, and am thus a bona-fide home theater geek. Do at times, I like to switch between listening to the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound track & the standard 2 channel Dolby Pro Logic audio (usually when listening to older mono films). The problem with the 606D is that there is a one-button switcher between these 2 modes--on the console, not the remote. So, lazy me, I have to get up and pause the thing and do it that way. Which, if you think about it, does kind of suck because the whole concept is to quickly switch back and forth between the two modes to see which sounds better. Not a major issue, though.
Sync problems. Apparently, there are some DVD players that really have a hard time with syncing the audio to the picture. I have noticed this a couple of time, almost exclusively in the first 5 minutes of a film, and only on 2 discs (The Game, Fast Times at Ridgemont High). Believe me, if this was a recurring problem, I couldn't watch DVD's at all, it would drive me crazy. But this model seems to be on the good end of sync problems.
Finally, sometimes it's confusing whether to hit the "menu" button or "title" button to get to where you want to go, and sometimes it puts you on a blank screen, and you have to sit through the FBI warning all over again. I think these problems will be sussed out in the next generation, however.
