| mdm's Full Review: Pioneer DV-05 DVD Player |
After much research, I finally settled on the Pioneer Elite DV-05. I found it for $650 new on the net, and was willing to pay an extra $200 for the known Pioneer quality and the superior picture afforded by the Elite's circuitry.
The unit was easy to unpack and install, and I was up and running in moments. The blacks are black and the colors vivid. Even using composite video (my TV doesn't do S- or component video), the quality is equal to laserdisc.
The unit features S- and component video out, digital out, dual composite video and audio outs. It's everything you'd expect from the Elite line. It was lighter than I expected, but I don't place a whole lot of value on weight or simulated wood paneling.
The remote layout is sub-optimal. The buttons are too small and not placed for natural use as you hold the remote in your hand. My Pioneer integrated amplifier has a programmable remote, so I'll be using it, primarily.
I highly recommend the player, but don't pay the $1000 list price - you don't have to! If you like laserdisc quality, go for the Elite.
