I traded my Sony DVP S7700 for a Pioneer DV09. Being in Canada I found, don't know why, the Pioneer DV09 to be priced at $2220. But it is well worth the money. I managed to pick one up for $1800 Canadian Dollars at the local store.
Why did I trade in my Sony DVP S7700, the reference standard for the DVD's? Because my Sony DVD player was giving me grief. It was having some sort of timing delay between the Cr and Cy CB's. As some of you might know the information on a DVD is stored as Cr, Cy and Cb. As all these three information is read separately any timing delay could cause color bleeding and ghost pictures. This will differ from DVD to DVD. My Sony DVD player was doing just that.
So when my friend at the local home audio store called me and said that the Pioneer DV09 is on sale I decided to research a bit more on the DV09. To my utter satisfaction I found out that The Pioneer DV09 support a feature that lets you adjust the timing between the above mentioned signals.
Great. Compared to the Sony's best DVD player this unit has dual 96 kHz 24 bit DAC. It also has 2 Power transformers. But the most important thing is it has Y/C timing Adjuster, which takes care of the above described problem. I never had to use it even on DVD's that Sony was screwing up on.
Now let us look at the features that make this Unit a keeper for my collection of gadgets, which I am so proud of.
1. Audio. DTS, Dolby AC3 and Dolby Prologic, all three plays really well. I am impressed.
2. Video. DV09 has 2 10 bit Video encoders that really does an awesome job. I am yet to see a DVD player that does any better.
3. Solid Construction. All aluminum front. Beautiful finish. I have to keep all the rest of my components away from this as this looks too good to be around them. All copper Chassis and very good shielding.
4. Double Doors for the compartment. Don't know how much more this helps the already awesome display and sound. But if you care the DVD compartment is really an air locked compartment.
5. Quickly select from the remote the audio signal you want and the subtitles.
6. THX certified. May be another money making scheme. But when George Lucas puts his name behind it may be I would give it some respect. But I am impressed whether or not this unit is THX certified
7. Ample out puts. Optical. Coaxial. SVideo. Component, RCA plenty and more of them in the back and all gold plated except the optical out :-)
All of the above made it a keeper. Period.
Now lets look at what is bad.
1. The size of the Unit in ackward. It is a bit more taller than the other units so if you have a standard size cabinet it may not fit.
2. If you are an audiophile and love to listen to your CD's the way it should sound buy another CD player as this unit is little too on the sharp side. Not realistic at all. May be for an average user this will sound good. But not at all for me. My advice buy a separate CD player.
3. Horrible remote control. I hate it as I only found like a few keys useful.
4. Slow play is very bad compared to the Sony as Sony has real smooth slow play.
Over all if you have the extra few buck pick this up as I would put my reputation behind this unit. But don't count on a friendly remote and a nice smooth slow motion.
