| bigdinosaur's Full Review: Pioneer DVL-91 DVD Player |
When this unit first became available it was beyond my means. I waited and finally purchased a refurbished one for $800.00 U.S.
There were four major reasons I bought this unit: 1. It was highly recommended by friends; 2. It played laserdiscs, VCDs and DVDs; 3. It can play CDR discs; and 4. It could be modified to remove the macrovision encoding which was not compatible with my expensive video projector.
I don't know what to say except 'I LOVE this unit.' It plays everything wonderfully. The picture and sound quality rivals any other units on the market---even the newest ones. It has component outputs, a nice menu system which can sometimes override the DVD menus to eliminate annoyances (overlong FBI warnings, etc.), the DTS sound capability, laserdisc side changing. It's a real performer.
The only disadvantage to this unit is that it's not produced any more. You will have to find a used or refurbished one.
If you enjoy fine home theatre (especially if you have a laserdisc collection), you'll like the convenience and performance of this unit. For a combo unit, this one fits its name...ELITE.
