As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I bought the RCA model for one reason - it was the cheapest model available at the time. I thought that I was getting a good deal; I could watch DVD movies without scraping too deep into my bank account. After about four months of concervative use, my player started to freeze during movies and then shut itself off. After doing this for a while, the performance degenerated to the point where it wouldn't even stay on for longer than fifteen seconds after I turned it on. Customer service was a joke; so I was stuck with a piece of electronic equipment that didn't do anything.
I gave up on it and let it sit for a while (back to VHS) and then I decided to plug it in and see if it would work after its vacation. It does work off and on, but it is very unpredictable. I couldn't invite guests over to watch a movie because there would be no certainty that it would work when they arrived. When I bought the cheaper model, I expected it to lack some features found in the more expensive players and maybe not last as long, but a four month life span for any kind of electronic equipment is ridiculous. Incidently, I have decided to put up with the sporadic performance until I can afford one of those trick hand-held DVD players!
