This is a review on the BIGGEST DVD player from Sony. This unit can fit a whopping 200 DVDs or CDs.
Needless to say, due to the capacity of the unit, this player not only delivers all the bells and whistles of a single disk player, but the sheer size is overwhelming. This unit over 1 FEET wide, over 1 1/2 feet deep and it towers OVER 1/2 foot in height! Better clear out that entertainment center if you are planning to get one.
Why would anyone want something this big? Well, this is NOT for everyone. I purchased this because the idea of putting all my DVDs and CDs in a changer was something that was important for me-but that's just me. I like the fact that I can 'dial' in a DVD or CD and have it start playing without having to open a jewel-case and putting it in a player. My friends call that lazy.. I call it, effective time management.
Anyways... This unit delivers almost everything you can ask for...I will start out with the 'good' points of this unit. This monster can eat 200 DVD/CD/VCDs, It looks for DVD-Text and CD-Text, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, Picture Memory(Nifty), Universal Remote, Component Video, PC Keyboard Input... that's just the short list. This units features either meets or beats most other players.
This is by far NOT the best it could have been. From my experience, Sony electronic products are hits and misses.. I've have really good quality to very low quality from Sony... This unit is a so-so with the good out weighing the bad(barely). I have a few complaints with the monster(mostly with the memo feature).
First, this unit advertises a "DiscMemo" feature that remembers all the names of your DVD/CDs.. great.. but wait... the feature is slow to respond when scrolling and worse, when scrolling, the names disappear until you stop scrolling... that defeats the whole purpose of the DiscMemo.
Second complaint, getting the names in the "Discmemo" was a pain in the booty.. took me over 2 hours to get everything named...not bad until you find out that the unit forgets the name if you don't put the DVD/CD back in it's original slot... go figure!
Last complaint, about 1% of DVDs and 3% of CDs actually put their titles or a thumbnail picture for memo features, therefore you most likely have to type everything in yourself. Sony's response to that was to force me to register my product and "will send me a DVD of still images of recent movies"... too little too late...
My solution to all this you ask, I type out my whole DVD/CD collection on good old Microsoft Excel and printed it in a booklet format, put some clip art on it and put the menu next to my remote.
The DiscMemo aside, this is a pretty good player, the sound is AWESOME, the picture is crisp and sharp. This unit, along with my Sony TV (Sony 36inch XBR flat screen, read my review under Sony TVs) and Sony Amplifier, will literally, with one touch of the button(play):
-Play the DVD
-Turn my TV on and put it on the right video input
-Adjust the TV screen to 16:9 format(on 16:9 DVDs)
-Turn on my amp and select the right audio input and sound format,
.. now that's ease.... all this with one touch of a button and without leaving my chair :)
I must say that this player is NOT for everyone, it is for people like me who must have the newest and biggest toys with the most buttons and lights.... I enjoy this player and most of it's features.
