My first DVD player was an RCA 5220P (see my review of it if you are interested). The RCA is a competent player that will not disappoint. The Sony, for the most part, is better.
Most recent DVD players will produce excellent pictures and sound. What will vary in how much you pay will be the added features. For example, the Sony does not have an onboard Dolby Digital decoder. Obviously, that's not a problem if you already have one built into your receiver.
One of its best features is its ability to find the soundtrack on a DVD that has the highest number of channels, usually 5.1. In almost a year of use, this feature has only been fooled a couple of times. It is an example of the thought that went into the design.
As with all DVD players, you will want to use the S-video out for the best picture, and the optical out for the best sound. Naturally, will will need a TV with S-video in and a receiver than can accept an optical input.
When it works, it works extremely well. However, the sound does on occasion get out of synch with the picture. I haven't noticed any pattern to determine what causes this. Correcting it is simple: just stop the player, then restart it. The DVD will pick up at the point where it was stopped and the sound will be re-synched.
I have this connected to an all Sony system, so using it is very convenient with the unified remote that came with the Sony STR DE825 receiver.
One note for audio fans: this also makes an excellent CD player, especially when connected via an optical cable to the receiver. Your CDs will never have sounded better.
