I say that, because the technology of DVDs, like CDs is hard to get wrong. It is pretty much a standard across the board. My wife bought this unit for me for a surprise at Christmas of 1999. I supressed my urge to examine what she paid because it was a gift, (I found out when a credit bill came in) so this time, the sales clerk made out like a bandit. That bothers me, the fact that they have the discretion to knock a few bucks off the price but won't until you verbally wrestle with them. Immediately after Christmas '99, the prices on DVDs started dropping like stones, and keep dropping. Anyone buying VHS movies at this point are fools. I love all the features, which are those of any DVD worth it's salt.
One little annoyance: On some discs, I can hear a high pitched "whirring" sound or a whine for a second or two, and it seems to come when a chapter stop is being passed. (that's just my guess) It only happens once in a while. "Mission To Mars" is one DVD in particular that I remember hearing it. It doesn't happen at every chapter stop either. Only 2 or 3 times total. I have the normal stereo audio cables connected from the DVD to my Mitsubishi 50" projection TV (not Hi-Def), which then outputs into my stereo. My stereo is a Sony, but one of the earlier generation Dolby Surround Sound models from the late 80s/early 90s. It splits out into six speakers (no sub-woofer). Keep in mind that I am just a casual user, not a nut, uh, oh, I mean an audiophile that will spend $800 or more just for speakers. It's not like I am going to spend all my time in my rec room trying to actually get inserted into The Matrix.
