| zhouse's Full Review: Toshiba SD-5109 DVD Player |
The Toshiba SD-5109 is one the better DVD players buys you can make. Now, believe me when I say it is: I know, since I bought one for my father this past Christmas. It possessed everything he wanted in a DVD player. And my father has been trying to find the best DVD player for more than a year. As my family and I watched movies on it during my Christmas Vacation 1999, we were amazed on how easy it was to operate this player. No high IQs needed to read the instruction manual. No rocket scientists are needed to help run this machine.
Now check out these cool features.
-A Dual CD tray, so you can place two movies in the player at the same time, which will allow you to play two discs one after the other, in case you don't want to walk back and forth to the player. Now, I don't know why the Epinions.com info on this product says it can hold three discs at once, but trust me it can only hold two discs.
-Progressive Scan technology, which removes a lot of blurry stuff on the screen, which is noticeable on older DVD player models, and gives you an ultra sharp picture. This technology also complements HDTV technology as well, if you already own an HDTV of your very own.
-Spatializer N-2-2 Virtual Surround technology, which brings in clear audio when using your home theatre's surround sound speakers. You'll get that kick @$$ "man, i'm in the movie theatre" feel, instead of hollow, echoed sounds that sounds really yucky.
-3D DNR Video Noise Reduction, which will remove a lot of background noise from movies (mainly buzzing noises), bringing you clearer sounds when watching your DVD movies.
As for any drawbacks, the only one I find is that this DVD player cannot read or recognize CD-Rs and CD-RWs. So, if any of you cool cats out there have burned albums or burned Video CDs, you're out of luck if you want this player to play them. If you were to try, you'll end up destroying your burned CD and perhaps the player itself.
UPDATE: Since the last time I've written this review (my first review, if anyone cares to know), I've seen this player selling for $599 retail, and recently (like three weeks ago) I was at Fry's Electronics in Burbank, CA, where I saw this player on sale for only $399. That's a dramatic cut on the original price I quoted the first time I wrote this review. So for the price and features listed, you may consider buying this player for your personal use.
