| noahsark32's Full Review: Toshiba SD-5109 DVD Player |
Originally purchased an open box SD5109 for $399 to hook up to my Mitsubishi WS55857 (55" 16:9 ratio) through a Yamaha RX-V3000 receiver. Everything is connected via Monster Z cables (don't by cheap cables when spending good money on great equipment). Component 480P video and optical audio.
Performance was great for movies. Did not have any problems with remote as indicated by other opinions. Player is hard to find locally since it was replaced by the SD6200. The 5109 is basically last years (Toshiba's first progressive scan player). If you don't have a TV that can handle 480P, don't buy this player. Get the 1200 or 2200.
Looked a dozens of players and purchased several with 30 day money back or exchange. Took back 2 others and ended up with the 5109. Will trade up for 6200 soon.
Everything works great except if you try to view non-anamorphic material "extra features" (usually the commentary, extra scenes, behind the scenes stuff) in 480P. You'll need to hook up both sets of component video (480P & 480I). This player has hardware outputs for both. When compared to the new 6200 (one set up component out, software switched). If you're into watching the "extra features" get the 6200. By the time you get two sets of great cables you can buy a 6200. I will be trading in my SD5109 for the 6200. Do your homework and you'll find great deals on the SD6200. Found them new in box for $529 with original warranty.
If you're not into watching the extended features or don't have a high end receiver, but have a TV that can handle 480P, this is a great player for the price, if you can find one. Don't pay more than $400 for this when you can get a SD6200 for just a few bucks more.
