| pweisenberg's Full Review: Toshiba SD-2109 DVD Player |
I thought I was going to be a trendsetter, but nearly 4 million DVD players were sold in 1999 compared with 1 million in 1998. The improvements in sales were much attributed to a drop in DVD player prices. In November, the average price was $298, down 30% from $428, the average price the year before.
I jumped into the market buy purchasing the Toshiba 2109 DVD player. I wanted a relatively inexpensive player that still would provide with a high end, high quality pictures and enough features to satisfy. This model is the low end of the Toshiba DVD line with a range in price of 1,999 for the top of the line SD9100 to my SD2109.
The SD2109 DVD Video Player delivers superior video and audio performance, The player has the features you would expect including being Dolby® Digital ready and having DTS compatible digital surround sound outputs available.
It also comes with its proprietary ColorStream Component Video Outputs technology.
It is the ideal connection between a digital video source and an analog display device. When connected to one of more than 30 Toshiba component video equipped TV's, the ColorStream connection delivers outstanding detail and resolution and unmatched color purity.
But enough of the sales pitch.
I agree that the video is excellent, but I would expect that the DVD technology itself would make most players far superior to normal VHS viewing. The picture was not distorted, jumpy or any other interference at all.
While I don’t currently have a home theater configuration, With the S-Video hookup and the Spatializer 3-D digital audio signal enabled me to enjoy the Virtual Surround Sound from my two-channel speaker system
The remote is easy to use and comfortable in the hand. A convenient 4-way compass cursor pad at the center of the remote allows you simple navigation. The Remote Confirmation feature lets know when a feature is actually selected on the DVD player by responding with a soft "beep". Some may find this annoying, but I found it useful.
The on-screen menu is easy to following. I never had to take the instructions out of the box. Plus you know when a feature is not available on that title, because a small red X will appear, signaling the feature is not available.
The fast forward feature allows you to fly through the movie title at up to 30 time’s normal viewing. This makes it easy to quickly get to a scene that you want to view again.
Zooming is also fun, when you want to get right into a scene and see what is really happening, especially on special effects. Zoom will go up to 8 times normal 4:3 aspect ratio.
The unit seems light in its constructed materials. And, yes I could spend another 500 dollars and get a better-built DVD player. But, while the unit itself does not have the feel of a heavy audio component, it still performs like a heavy hitter. Hey my VCR and CD player are now lightweight too.
Toshiba is now only giving away 5 free DVD with the purchase of a player, but Its better than none. I also signed up for Sony’s DVD rental service “NetFlix” and received my first 10 rentals free too.
Conclusion: With Sales projected to be over 8 million this year and price falling so fast, what are you waiting for. Buy a Toshiba DVD player, you won’t be disappointed.
