| surferdude7's Full Review: Yamaha DVD-S700 DVD Player |
Here is a model that at one time was the cream of the crop. My friend has had this one for over one year now and it has been trouble free from day one. The list of this one was about $800 at one time, Im sure if you could find one it would be a lot cheaper. They are not producing it any more but, they can be found brand new if you search for it.
The Yamaha DVD-S700 is a second-generation DVD player with Digital Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1. It has a built-in decoder for the digital Dolby 5.1, this means you dont need a Dolby 5.1 receiver to get true 5.1 digital sound. (You can also hook it to a Dolby 5.1 receiver.) Now for the DTS you will need a receiver that is DTS ready for you to get the true DTS sound.
The front of the DVD player is beautiful with an orange colored display that sets it off from most other brands. The display is large enough so it is easy to read. It is a sleek looking DVD player.
The remote that comes with it is easy to navigate and it has good-sized buttons, so you wont accidentally hit two at the same time. It is a multi-function remote that can program other things like another TV and so on.
It has a Twin-Focus Laser for better video and will play your DVD, Audio CD and a Video CD.
The back of the Yamaha DVD-S700 has all kind of hookups for your needs. There is a six channel discrete output for sound, standard input/outputs for stereo and a coaxial and optical digital output. For the video it has your composite video, S-video and component video. There are plenty of video and sound hookups for anyones needs.
For the picture and sound quality, well it is impressive. We used the Dolby 5.1 through a Kenwood receiver with the little Bose 5.1 speaker system and it is incredible on the quality it puts put. The picture was second to none played on a Hitachi 60 screen that looked better than any 19 color TV set.
Didnt try the DTS because my friends receiver wasnt DTS ready.
This is a single DVD or CD player.
Other Features
These are features found on most other DVD player brands.
Multi-Angle & Multi-Shot, it will let you view 9 different angles. The only problem with this is, the DVD has to be made with the angle views built in. It is nice at times, I have a Metallica DVD (Cunning Stunts) that has three songs that can be viewed at different angles. Here you have the choice of 4 angle views, each angle views a different member through the same song.
Multi-Language & Multi-Subtitle here again the DVD has to be made for the different languages and subtitles. The DVD-S700 can provide for 8 languages and 32 subtitle languages. Most DVDs have two or three of each.
Other features are freeze frame, fast forward or backward in different speeds and you can even go slower in forward or backwards motions.
Overall
If you can find a new one at a low price, pick it up, it is worth it. I have searched around the Internet and have found a few in the $400 plus range. There is really nothing I dislike about this DVD player.
In all reality there are a lot of other brands out there with about the same features in the $300 range.
I highly recommend the Yamaha DVD-S700 because it is reliable and provides great sound and video.
