| expert_witness's Full Review: JVC FS-SD9 Shelf System |
I bought my JVC mini-system as a replacement for an entire cabinetful of electronics. You know something -- I should have done this years ago! Having a tiny, full-sounding system tucked inconspicuously on a shelf is far more civilized than having a stand-alone rack of equipment taking up huge swatches of room; and because it's more accessible, I listen to more music with it.
The main reason I chose this above all other mini-systems is because of its dimensions -- most mini-systems are rather deep, 12" or more, and just won't sit on a bookshelf. This one's wider than it is deep, and so it nestles in perfectly among my books. It doesn't have a cassette deck (fine, I've been weaning myself off cassettes) though it has auxilliary inputs if I ever want to add extra equipment (and at times I've had a cassette player, a mini-disc recorder, etc plugged in; they're never permanent.) The only shortcoming I've found to all the controls is the lack of a balance knob; there are times when I'd rather have one speaker louder than the other to compensate for proximity to the sofa, etc. Oh well, you can't have everything.
The controls are pretty straightforward, though until you remember where the volume buttons are, for example, you can find yourself groping around in the dark, accidentally changing from AM to FM, etc., as some of the buttons are on the top of the unit and some are on the front face, and you usually have the system somewhere where it's easy to read one set and not the other. (In my living room, I've got it placed rather low -- the top buttons are easy to see, whereas the front ones I have to bend down to read.) Once you get used to the button placement, there's no problem.
I did finally break down and buy a Polk subwoofer to get more oomph in the low frequencies -- the tiny speakers are surprisingly warm and clear on their own (far better than the speakers on the other lower-end JVC systems of similar design) so that coupled with a subwoofer the overall sound is really quite good.
It all takes up very little room, hides well, and sounds great. Exactly what I'd hoped for when I purchased it. Liked it enough to buy another similar (slightly lower model) system for my upstairs bedroom. Great little product line!
