I am extremely satisfied with my Aiwa Compact Disc/ Stereo system. It is certainly not a top of the line model. However, for someone looking for a low cost ( purchased for about $175 about two years ago ), good quality speakers with some nice features this is a good model. Some of the more prevelant characteristics that I like about this Aiwa system are the remote control, the multi-disc player, and the ease of use.
Features
Setting up the system after purchase was simple, even for an electronic dimwit like myself. I had it all hooked up in about thirty minutes. There are easy to follow instructions contained in the manual which make it real easy.
Sound quality is acceptable for such a low cost model. Now granted, the speakers that come with the system are not very powerful. For example, if you set the sound above six on the sound scale of one to ten the speakers will already have some distortion in play of either the radio or the CD player. The sound will not be entirely clear. Be to be honest, the only time you will use the sound at that high a level will be at a party because you get a really nice sound at the lower levels and anything above four will actually disturb your neighbors!
Reception of FM radio stations requires you to use an external antenna that comes with the package. It is a wire antenna which must be positioned in such a way to get maximum reception by the user. You may want to adjust when first purchased to get the best possible reception.
Sound Settings
There are adjustments available to mix the proper bass and/or treble for your listening pleasure. There is also a graphic equalizer feature where you can set the music to play in either a rock format ( emphasizes more the treble and bass in your music ), a pop version ( more emphasis on the vocals ), or a classic version ( where there is a more strong sound with a really heavy bass sound ). To be frank, I see no real gain from switching the versions. The fluctation is minimal, at the least.
It has two tape decks so dubbing of tapes is possible. I have found the tape players to be all right but hardly use them on this system.
There is a circular three CD, top loading system contained within this particular unit. This is the best feature for me. I happen to believe that anything more than a three CD unit is not really needed because I ( like most people ) will listen during a period of time at most to three different CD's ( and usually just one ). Anything more than that is unnecessary in my opinion. You can change the other two CD's by the way while listening to the other one. The sound quality is outstanding too.
Other Features
It has a lot of the other standard features found on most systems too such as a timer, clock, AM/FM radio also. There is a karaoke option with a microphone where you can sing along and tape your "efforts". However, this is useless. I tried it once and the sound quality was actually really poor; it would be no fun to use at a party or a family gathering.
However overall, the Aiwa NSX 50 is a very good quality, low cost sound system for your home.
