The Bottom Line: One Awesome System, Can't begin to say how loud it gets without distortion at higher volume levels, Very Flashy, lights everywhere, Very good sound quality, Variety of settings, Definitely recommended!

| bobcat292000's Full Review: Aiwa NSX-MTD9 Shelf System |
It's been about 2 years since I've had this mini-system and haven't had any troubles whatsoever. The system's output is a total of 410 Watts delivered through the typical 5 speaker home theater configuration. 155 Watts each to the front right & left, and 34 Watts center, 33 watts to each of the surrounds. This unit can get extremely loud but I have to question the actual output numbers! Definitely not a true 155 watts for the fronts. That's a bit hyped up if you ask me but nonetheless I've had the volume cranked up to near limit and if you want your eardrums, I'd suggest you not do that lol. The volume goes to 50, if you can listen to this at or near volumes 11-25 without grabbing the cottonballs, more power to ya hehe. By the way volume 11 is an obscure reference lol.
There are a variety of graphic equalizer and DSP/Digital Signal Processing adjustments. On the graphic equalizer there is a choice of Rock, Pop, Latin or Classic. The DSP Surround settings are as follows, Disco, Live, Stadium & Hall. I Personally like to use both simultaneously and set to Rock/Stadium. Better bass and surround effect with that setting, best of both worlds. There's also Dolby Pro Logic mode with Normal, Phantom, and 3 Channel Stereo Settings. I usually use phantom, It redirects sound from the center channel to the 2 Main front speakers and the vocals are improved without using the center channel speaker. As for the Bass, WOW! All Aiwas of course come with the Super T Bass feature and on this unit I keep mine set at 1st or 2nd position depending on the music. There are 3 settings for it but I doubt you'll need the 3rd, this puts out Awesome Bass without that!
This system also has a 5 disc carousel CD changer, dual auto reverse full logic cassette decks, AM/FM stereo tuner with an included AM antenna, but if you listen to AM on this system then you're defeating the purpose of rattling the walls and waking up the neighbors lol. I've already had a few complaints without a subwoofer heh. I haven't yet had the opportunity to connect a sub, I didn't really need it with all of the bass that this has already, but there is a sub output, and all Dolby Digital connections on the back, as well as connections for using Dolby Pro Logic when hooked to a TV. I've used this as a home theater once and wasn't bad at all, but I needed my big Sony System, no Mini System can take the place of a full fledged Home Theater setup with receiver etc.
Next I want to mention the light show that this puts on, Absolutely Amazing! The entire front panel lights up in neon green, blue, red and yellow. Even the dual cassette deck wells illuminate in red & green, and the 5 disc carousel lights up also in red and green when opened. The 1 to 5 buttons just above the disc tray are lit up in red when not in use and when depressed they blink so you know which disc is playing. LOL and if that weren't enough, there's a long neon green bar above those buttons. There's a shuttle type button...the type you'd see on a vcr, that you can control various settings with and change the preset tuner stations. That's illuminated in bright neon blue and blinks when changing stations, very cool. The main display itself has so many lights that you could land a plane at Philly International in my livingroom lol. The spectrum analyzer is incredible! I can't say enough about the "fireworks display" this has, may be too flashy for some but I like it, fun for the feeble-minded? lol. I forgot to mention that this also has karaoke feature, I've never used it myself so I don't know much on that, I still have to experiment with that...yeah right, all the cats & dogs in the neighborhood would keel over, but certainly has karaoke with 2 mic inputs and all settings for that as well.
As far as ease of use, you might want to keep the manual close. I don't use this unit as much now as I did 2 years ago so I've forgotten a few things myself. I had to turn it on while writing this review just to refresh my memory a bit heh. Setting the 20 FM presets and clock, etc. needs some practice. If you read the manual you should be ok, may be frustrating at first but eventually you'll get the hang of it...somewhat lol. Just keep the manual around for quick reference.
You can control pretty much everything from the remote, even opening & closing the 5 disc carousel drawer. The full logic tape decks...very nice that you can stop/pause/play/fast forward/rewind tapes from remote, cd player, AM/FM tuner presets, Super T Bass, graphic EQ/DSP settings, clock/sleep timer can all be set from the remote. The remote is a bit large though, there's 3 inches of bare space on the bottom of the remote, i'd assume for comfortable hand positioning. Buttons are spaced apart nicely so you don't accidentally hit one when punching another.
Overall though, this system is a keeper, I love the Punchy sound with tons of bass, more than enough bass to spare. The lights are spectacular, especially at night when using headphones or at lower volume levels, the room might as well have the ceiling light on lol. Could be a bit easier for some to use but need to have patience. I love it though and it simply kicks (_I_).
