I am new to this site and I just stumble upon it by chance. While I was looking around on this site, I was very intrigued by all of the opinion surrounding Bose. I did take the time to read about 20 or so pro-Bose and anti-Bose reviews. As you will see in my profile I have worked for a great deal of different electronic companies over the last two decades and have a good understanding of what is going on in the market place today.
First and foremost I would like to say that I am not a Bose junky, but I do have a great deal of respect for what this company has accomplished. There are many different electronic companies in the market place today that make some incredible technologies. However, consumers must understand what their own needs are and make an informed decision based on those needs. Each buyer must find what is right for him or her. Bose takes a different approach from most other manufactures, which in my eyes is what makes them very unique.
In the past (60s - early 90s) this was most likely scenario:
A family buys a stereo rack system with all the trimming. This system, regardless of who manufactured it was not very user-friendly to setup, possibly only one member of the family could operate it, and it took up a great deal of living space. Overall this system gave the family a good quality sound-- Sound familiar! (Pun intended)
Bose realized this consumer need and took the lead at designing a line of systems, which transcended what was currently available. Now you have systems that sound good, takes up very little living space, very user-friendly to setup and most importantly, anyone in the family could operate them.
Now this is not to say that there are not better sounding systems on the market, but within theses guidelines listed above, Bose makes some of the best systems on the market today. If you are a person that likes all of those gadgets and complicated wire setup, then there are other systems on the marketplace that maybe better suited for your needs.
I currently do not own a Bose Lifestyle system, but I do own one of their Bose Wave Radio's and I think it's a remarkable product. I do recommend the Bose systems to my family members and to many of my friends, because of it ease of use. None of my family or friends are techies, but they do want a good quality sound system.
Once my current surround sound system (JVC) needs replacing I do plan to buy a Bose surround system. For my needs it probably will be their Lifestyle 25 II ($2500). I currently own some other great products by JVC, Sony, Phillips, and Panasonic.
Some reviewers complained about the high price of Bose products. Well if those reviewers would have done their homework they would understand that price is really not an issue. In Bose's 2000 product lineup they make complete systems for as little as $1000 or as much as $4000. It all depends on your needs.
And in a free market economy, that's the bottom line. Like it or not!
